Finally, it has been pointed out that free glutamate and glutamate salts make only a marginal contribution to total dietary glutamate intake. While not all regulatory authorities agree on whether free glutamates should be limited, human studies have shown that extremely high levels of free glutamic acid (137 g per day) can be ingested for 30 days or longer with no ill effect.
