and a faint penciled number at the corner of each suggests they were likely part of a larger series (one sees similar numbering on antique watercolors of flowers

or maybe never was

these two gents have spent many decades together

I do not have the combination, so it is also a puzzle to be solved! (I also think that locks make nice valentines!)
