with a bit of the mat stuck to the reverse and one small tear along the bottom edge

I'm not quite sure what this once was a part of

They feel to me midway between Italian reliquaries and Victorian glass domed waxworks, and most of all full of the never ending (and very early Victorian) drive to make momentos of every sort lest one be forgotten. And these of course are best lit by candlelight, with the reverse
